Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif the choice of a new 'generAsian'
Katrina Kaif trumps Christina Aguilera. At least, that's what our online readers seem to think. Last weekend, our interview with the Bollywood actress was the most-read story, over and above cover girl Christina. Both were in the UAE for shows – Aguilera was the latest high-profile star to play Emirates Palace, in a concert on Friday, while Kaif was the opening act in an all-star Bollywood show headlined by Emirates Business favourite Shah Rukh Khan at Dubai Festival City on Saturday.

Bollywood may be little more than a song-and-dance sideshow to the uninitiated, but as our readers have proved, despite the fact that more than 20 per cent of the world's population speaks Hindi, the industry transcends language barriers.
It reaches out to even the most jaded and cynical with its hokey blend of emotions: Laughter, tears, anger, happiness, song and dance, love, even a little kitchen sink action. Trying to explain the allure of this unique art form – even solely by way of its multi-billion-dirham revenue-spinning ability – is like trying to explain the popularity of football in cricket-mad India.
But 23-year-old Katrina Kaif also brought home one more thing – the popularity of our interview proved the importance of timing. Journalism is all about getting the right story before anyone else; and in getting our man in Bollywood to go across and interview the actress, Emirates Business was able to scoop the nation.
We didn't wait till she hit Dubai to print a reactive piece after the dust had settled at the venue, we sat down with Bollywood's new number one actress before she boarded the flight to the shiny emirate.
Kaif's appeal is partly due to her international roots: Born to a British mother and a Kashmiri father and raised in London, she is internationalising Hindi cinema alongside former Miss World Aishwarya Rai – who is as well known for her Longines and L'Oreal endorsements and for her appearances on the jury at Cannes as she is for her film work for the likes of Gurinder Chadha.
But it is Kaif who epitomises the globalised world we live in; she is the most successful of a series of foreigners seeking fame and fortune in the world's biggest film-making nation. Neither Norwegian-born Negar Khan nor Czech mate Yana Syncova Gupta are anywhere near as famous. In a world of expatriates, where the credit crunch and a tighter-knit international community mean more and more people are working overseas, Kaif is the face of the globalised talent hunt. Which quite puts Christina in her place.

Actress Sridevi turns on Yash Chopra
We know that Yash Chopra has made many other directors part of his production house Yash Raj Films but he himself has not yet called it a day. While people are speculating about who will star in Yash Chopra’s next directorial venture after Veer Zaara, here is a story that tells you what Yash Chopra planned recently but failed to make it materialise. Yash Chopra, who has made successful mature love stories like Kabhi Kabhie, Chandni, and Lamhe recently approached Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi to play the lead actors in his next film. While Bachchan agreed immediately, Sridevi took some time to make up her mind. Our source says, “After a few days, Yash and Sridevi’s husband Boney Kapoor had a chat about this film. Boney told Yash that he too was keen to re-launch his wife Sridevi in his own production and it would be better if Yash cast some other actress instead.” That’s when politician and Bachchan’s good friend Amar Singh got into the act. Apparently, Bachchan was quite kicked about doing a Yash Chopra film with Sridevi. Our source adds, “Amar Singh tried to convince Boney to let Sridevi act in Yash’s film. Boney still did not relent. He told Amar Singh that they are friends but he should let this one pass.”
So why didn’t Yash cast someone else instead of Sridevi? Our source reveals, “Anybody else apart from Sridevi would have not suited the role. Besides, Yash is a great filmmaker. If he thinks of a subject, he has the actor and actress in mind from day one. He did not make any compromises and put the project on the backburner when things did not work out with Sridevi.” When contacted, Boney confirmed that Yash had planned a film with Bachchan and Sridevi. He said, “However, I did not tell Yashji that I will be making Sridevi’s comeback film.” We then asked about Amar Singh trying to convince him to let the project happen. After a slight pause Boney replied, “No, Amar Singh did not speak to me about this.” When we probed further, saying that Bachchan and Amar Singh were quite enthusiastic that Yash’s project should go on the floors with Amitabh and Sridevi in the lead, Boney said, “Amar Singh and Amitji must have been keen. But it didn’t happen due to some other reason, which I am not aware of.”
Amitabh and Sridevi had earlier starred together in Inquilab, Aakhri Raasta, and Khuda Gawah and all the three films did reasonably well. Sridevi’s last film Judaai (1997) left the audience wanting for more but her comeback of sorts on the small screen as a goofy Tamilian wife in Mrs Malini Iyer strangely did not enjoy very high viewership. However, Boney does not rule out re-launching Sridevi on the big screen. He told Mumbai Mirror, “Sridevi’s comeback film has to have an extraordinary subject. It can’t be a run of the mill story. However, right now, my hands are full with other projects.”

Actress Priyanka Chopra bikini for “Dostana”
Although Priyanka Chopra had decided not to do a lip lock or don a bikini on screen, she has agreed to get into a swimsuit for Karan Johar’s romantic comedy “Dostana”.
“Karan Johar didn’t ask me to wear a bikini. But this is a beach movie. So it’s only natural that I get into beachwear. And I don’t mind at all. Because everyone else will be wearing even tinier clothes,” Priyanka told IANS.
The Bollywood beauty says she had a ball with co-stars Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham.
“I’ve worked with Abhishek and John before. But never like this. Their bonding is infectious. ‘Dostana’ was one big party. It’s a beachside sporty film. And I’m very much a water babe.
“The director Tarun Mansukhani’s is new but his wit sparkles. He’s written a really urbane tongue-in-cheek comedy.”
Priyanka can’t stop raving about the new love in her life. “No, his name isn’t Harman Baweja. It’s someone called Boo, a pet robot teddy bear who accompanies me everywhere in ‘Love Story 2050′. He’s all pink and the cutest creature on earth. I want to take him home.”
She added: “I was aware of Boo from the time he was conceived. It was Harman’s sister Rowena who thought of Boo. I’ve watched Boo acquire a life right in front of me. So it’s quite an exciting process.”
So attached has Priyanka become to Boo that she wanted to carry him home after the shooting. And the Bawejas (Harry and Harman) who’ve watched Priyanka stand by their project from the time Kareena Kapoor opted out were only too happy to let her have Boo.
“This was one film that’s filled with gadgets and electronic toys. But Boo is special because he is mine.”
Talking about her stint with sci-fi films, she said: “‘Love Story 2050′ is my second hi-tech film after ‘Krrish’. And I’m doing one more, ‘Drona’. But ‘Love Story’ was special because I did my career’s first double role with two different looks for the two halves set in two different periods. Boo was part of my futuristic look.”
“When FX turned a corner with ‘Krrish’, I was part of it. Now when it somersaults with ‘Love Story 2050′ and ‘Drona’ I’m part of both. Am I proud to be in these projects, or not?”

Asin Next With Salman Khan
Asin announced her second Hindi project after the movie Ghajini officially. She will play heroine in Salman Khan starring big budget movie London Dreams. The movie will be directed by Vipul Shah, the director of films like Aankhein and Namaste London.
Asin has played the female lead opposite Aamir Khan in Ghajini, the remake of a Tamil film of the same name. Earlier, the actor told that she would announce her next Hindi movie only after the release of Ghajini. But due to the unusual delay (the film was launched in 2006) in the release of Ghajini, the actress announced her next venture.
According to sources, the actress is also tipped to play heroine of two more Bollywood movie and a Hollywood.

Throughout the world, there is a tendency for more men to be born than women even in situations where there is no interference during pregnancy or at birth. The reasons for this are not entirely clear but Hamilton’s theory suggests that it may occur through an overshoot – essentially the species seeking to ensure that it always has enough males to ensure continuity. A larger number of men will die through accidents, war etc during the most fertile period of 13-33. In humans, therefore, the normal ratio is 996 women to every 1000 men.
However, in India, there has always been a tendency to value sons over daughters at birth – in 1901 the ratio was 972 due to infanticide. The ratio in India now has declined to 933. This may no longer be due to infanticide but is more likely linked to selective abortion. In states such as Kerala, where there is less access to ultrascan equipment and a much lower social acceptance of abortion, the ratio is much higher.
In some states, it is even worse. In the three big northern states of Punjab, Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, it is 874, 861 and 900 respectively. These figures suggest that throughout India as a whole, 3.2 million girls go ‘missing’ every single year – as many as 240 million in the course of a single person’s lifetime. In the state of Punjab (population 40 million), 250,000 girls alone are ‘missing’ every single year. The situation is now so grave that the United Nations has coined a new word for it – Femicide.
It is illegal in India to abort a foetus purely on the basis of sex but this is clearly widely ignored.
It is this issue that concerns Lara Dutta, who is an Economics graduate and who has been a UNPFA Goodwill Ambassador since 2001. With the deep social concern of actors such as Lara and Nandita Das, it’s clear to see that Bollywood need not just be about being a pretty face.

Actress Katrina Kaif is a Parveen Babi
We have learnt that Katrina Kaif is in the running for the role portrayed by Parveen Babi in Amar Akbar Anthony in the remake to be directed by David Dhawan. The film will also star the three Khan brothers - Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail- in the lead role.Katrina’s spokesperson tells us, “We are in talks with David. The role was offered to her but the shooting of the film will not happen so soon because first she will be completing the Partner 2 sequel. Currently she is busy shooting with Ranbir for a Rajkumar Santoshi film.”
If she agrees, this will be the second time after Main Pyaar Kyun Kiya that Salman and Katrina will romance each other on screen. Sohail Khan is producing it and it is likely to go on the floors early next year after Salman completes his film Veer with Anil Sharma. Actress Esha Deol to play women-centric roles
Hema Malini's daughter Esha Deol says that she is matured enough now to play women-centric roles. She admits that she entered the profession as a real brat when at the age of 18, but has since then traveled a long way. She will soon be seen playing an air hostess in Kunal Shivdasani's action flick 'Hijack'. She explains that her long absence from the screen was her conscious decision of not playing insignificant roles. Esha feels lucky to get friends like Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan, Uday Chopra and Tusshar Kapoor, among males, and with Chilarna, Natasha and Payal, among females.
Isn't she happy that her mom is looking for a groom for her? She says that her dream man should make her heart go pitter-patter and there should be strong chemistry between them. Kareena is all set to be seen in an altogether different avtar for Yash Raj Film’s next production. Soon she would be heard as Laila and the film which would be giving her this platform is ROADSIDE ROMEO.
ROADSIDE ROMEO - Well, that’s the first ever animation outing for YRF where Kareena along with Saif Ali Khan would be giving a voiceover for the dogs. In fact it is going to be a Kareena v/s Kareena outing since ROADSIDE ROMEO would be arriving on the same day (i.e. 24th October) as GOLMAAL RETURNS in which she plays one of the leading ladies.
Though the first look of ROADSIDE ROMEO (featuring Saif Ali Khan’s voice) was revealed months back when this Jugal Hansraj film was slated for Summer 2008 release, a delay to Diwali has resulted in the makers arriving with a new promo with Kareena in focus this time around. As Laila, the female dog who comes to give an audition for a heroine’s role, Kareena gets the right ‘ada’ in place to demonstrate the naughty-yet-smart streak.
She doesn’t just tease the casting director with her monosyllabic yet confident replies; she also intimidates him with her smartness. Not just that, she also flutters her eyelashes when the right time arrives and gives a lot more than just a simple message when the director probes deeper into skills. How exactly? Well, she just replies that she knows ‘everything - just about everything’!

Esha Deol believed that being an air-hostess was an easy job.
Esha Deol, like most people, always believed that being an air-hostess was an easy job.
But that was only till she got to play an airhostess herself. And that experience changed Esha’s perception for good. It was during the shoot of Kunal Shivdasani’s film Hijack — an action-thriller that also stars Shiney Ahuja — in which the sexy actress plays an airhostess that Esha realised how tough their jobs can be.
Says Esha, “For all these years, I thought an airhostess is only an attendant on flights. They only have to fly places with the passengers. But I was really mistaken!” Post her experience of playing an airhostess, she adds, “My opinion completely changed while I was shooting for my film Hijack .
There is so much more meaning and responsibility attached to her job. I play an airhostess in the movie and now I understand that she is somewhere responsible for the safety of the passengers apart from ensuring their convenience. Especially in a serious crisis like a hijack, she has to be alert, calm, witty and on her toes to make sure that the others on the flight do not panic. It’s definitely not an easy task.” So is there anything that she likes about being an airhostess? “Of course!” she promptly replies. “The uniform, the poise, flying places and all the perks coming with the job!” says Esha with a smile. Well, they don’t call it a high-flying job for nothing, right?

The angel of Dia Mirza for Arshad Warsi
Arshad Warsi is all geared up for his first home production which is go on floors in London in July. The film to be directed by Kabeer Kaushik is titled ‘I Believe In Angels…’
Arshad had a tough time finding the leading lady for his film coz all the big heroines were apprehensive of being paired with Arshad in the lead role. Arshad, no doubt, is a very talented actor, but he has not been able to make it big with lead roles. Finally, the chase ended with Dia Mirza who not only suits the role but was also too glad to be a part of it.
Talking about the film, Dia said,
“First of all, I’ve always enjoyed Arshad’s performances and it’s an honor to be in a film to be produced by him. Then when I heard the script I simply fell in love with my role and the script. Asihwarya Rai admitted that she will be playing a role of a sex worker
Asihwarya Rai admitted that she will be playing a role of a sex worker in American remake of a French movie CHAOS. It is reported that ash has asked the final script of the film and will act in the movie if her hubby gives her the permission.
According to some sources in the house of Bachchans it is pa Amitabh who encourages ash to act and so he without even consulting Abhishek has given the permission for his daughter in law to play the sex worker role.
Since this movie will be shot in an American way and so ash has to do some steamy scenes which involve her in a bed scene with her co star and a intercourse scene in which she has to cover her assets with only her panty on in a car, when the cops chase her. Some scenes will also involve her in some revealing clothes revealing her bosom and her inner garments.
She has to depict a street sex worker in the film. But according to ash the whole scenes will be shot in a polished way. Let’s hope so.
